ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - BIOCHEMISTRY

The University of North Florida invites applications for a tenure-track position in biochemistry at the assistant professor level to begin August 4, 2008. A Ph.D. is required in biochemistry or in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry. Postdoctoral research experience is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to high quality instruction of undergraduate chemistry courses and to developing an externally funded research program of innovative and publishable research that involves undergraduate students. Competitive startup funds are available. A cover letter and CV must be submitted online at www.unfjobs.org (position # 312790). Additional information about the position and application requirements/procedures can be found at http://www.unf.edu/coas/chemphys/chem/biochemist. Application review will begin Oct. 22, 2007 and continue until filled. UNF is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access/Affirmative Action Institution.

The Department

Chemistry and Physics is a department in the College of Arts and Sciences offering B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Physics. Currently the department has 13 tenure/tenure-track faculty (7 chemistry, 6 physics) and 11 laboratory lecturer faculty. Typically, we graduate 18-20 majors per year in chemistry. Six of the chemistry faculty are doing research with undergraduate students in the areas of; organic chemistry (Dr. Pradhan, Dr. Venkat), physical chemistry (Dr. Vergenz, Dr. Davis), inorganic chemistry (Dr. Lufaso) and analytical chemistry (Dr. Chalk).

More About the Position

The department of chemistry and physics is looking for a chemist who has background in biochemistry. The successful applicant would teach the upper level biochemistry class, either lower level introductory chemistry or general chemistry, and other classes that fit their professional background. Normal teaching load is two lectures and one laboratory section per semester during the academic year, although teaching responsibilities may be bought out via research funds and agreement from the chair. In addition, applicants are expected to start a research program in the area of biochemistry and seek external and internal funding for ongoing support of that research. Nominal time distribution is 75% teaching and 25% research and service.

This is a tenure track position and so the faculty member will go up for tenure in their sixth year. A mid-tenure review is sechduled for the third year.

Undergraduate Research

A focal point of the departments' direction is to significantly increase the undergraduate research opportunities for students and thus the profile of the chemistry program. In recent years the chemistry and physics department has increased external funding to >$1 million per year and as a result a majority of undergraduate students now do research (currently 25 students (juniors and senoirs) are doing research). To go along with this emphasis in undergraduate research we have significantly increased the available startup funds for recent positions.

Facilities and Instrumentation

The department moved into the Science and Engineering building in February of 2004. The facility is state-of-the-art and provides a great environment for educating students and doing research. Teaching labs, research labs and faculty offices are on the second and third floor of the building in the south wing. Each faculty member has a 400 sq ft research lab (with fume hood) located next to their office. The department has a wide array of analytical equipment that is used for both teaching and research. Any/all of this equipment can be used for research and so should be factored into decisions about startup funds. Of special interest to this position is our new 500 MHz NMR (Varian) which has both liquids and solids capability.
