The DepartmentChemistry and Physics is a department in the College of Arts and Sciences offering B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Physics. Currently the department has 13 tenure/tenure-track faculty (7 chemistry, 6 physics) and 11 laboratory lecturer faculty. Typically, we graduate 18-20 majors per year in chemistry. Six of the chemistry faculty are doing research with undergraduate students in the areas of; organic chemistry (Dr. Pradhan, Dr. Venkat), physical chemistry (Dr. Vergenz, Dr. Davis), inorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry. The department is also home to the UNF Environmental Center under the direction of Dr. Ray Bowman (who is retiring this year). More About the PositionThe department of chemistry and physics seeks a chemist who has a background in environmental chemistry. The successful applicant would teach upper level environmental chemistry, introductory chemistry courses, and other classes that fit his/her professional background. The default teaching load for this position is two lectures per semester during the academic year, although teaching responsibilities may be reduced when research funds permit. Nominal time distribution is 2/3 teaching, research and service and 1/3 directorship of the Environmental Center. Applicants are expected to lead a research program involving undergraduate students in the area of environmental chemistry and seek external and internal funding for ongoing support. The Environmental Center maintains a website at http://www.unf.edu/dept/ecenter. Undergraduate ResearchA focal point of the departments' direction is to significantly increase the undergraduate research opportunities for students and thus the profile of the chemistry program. In recent years the chemistry and physics department has increased external funding to >$1 million per year and as a result a majority of undergraduate students now do research (currently 25 students (juniors and senoirs) are doing research). To go along with this emphasis in undergraduate research we have significantly increased the available startup funds for recent positions. Facilities and Instrumentation The department moved into the Science and Engineering building in February of 2004. The facility is state-of-the-art and provides a great environment for educating students and doing research. Teaching labs, research labs and faculty offices are on the second and third floor of the building in the south wing. Each faculty member has a 400 sq ft research lab (with fume hood) located next to their office. The department has a wide array of analytical equipment that is used for both teaching and research. Any/all of this equipment can be used for research and so should be factored into decisions about startup funds. Applying for the PositionApplications for this position must be made online.
