No one like you. No place like this. If you love chemistry or think you might, we are here to help fulfill your dreams. How do we do it? The faculty of the Chemistry program place a high priority on excellence in teaching. UNF offers a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry (ACS accredited) through a four year program of study. Students take courses relating to organic, inorganic, analytical, physical and biochemistry. The upper level classes, typically less than twenty students, are small enough to enable students to interact closely with faculty. Chemistry is the central science and it serves as a bridge between mathematics, physics and the biological sciences. Knowledge of chemistry has always been fundamental to the investigation of the physical world. Chemistry is unique among the sciences in that it studies interactions between matter and energy at the atomic level. Even with only a limited number of different atoms, the different combinations and arrangements creates different kinds of matter with a vast array of properties that is clearly evident in daily life. The chemistry program is designed to give students a diverse, yet deep, understanding of chemical phenomena. Most courses include substantial laboratory work in order to enable students to obtain first-hand experience and to learn experimental skills used by practicing chemists. Students interpret and explain experimental data from a broad array of instrumentation, including a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS), IR spectrometers (FT-IR), a 500 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer (NMR), an X-ray diffractometer, and a variety of other instrumentation. There are also numerous opportunities for undergraduate research work with our faculty. Our graduates find employment in industry or go on to graduate, medical, or veterinary schools.
